You may have read a lot about character building and resilience in children. However, adults should have resilience in all matters as well.

As a parent you will encounter various challenges. You should have the ability to deal with the ups and downs of life and keep yourself positive.

The six layers of resilience

People think resilience is a mind control matter; though it is a part of it but  resilience has six key layers which are dynamic and can be modified.

  • Innate resilience is something you already have inside of you. Some people are more resilient than others. The same can be seen in different children. With innate resilience you built your nature and nurture. It is influenced by your personality and values. Usually  innate resilience is coded into our DNA and cannot be modified.
  • The brain is pretty powerful. It can be modified and it frames your outlook on life. By building resilience, you can have a less stressful view of the world. Meditation and gratitude allow you to have a clear state of mind. The best way to build upon this kind of resilience is journaling. Journaling can reflect on your life’s experience and write them down. Another aspect is the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which means finding beauty in imperfect things.
  • Developing your physical capabilities also allows you to become more resilient. When you start nurturing your body, you will meet the challenges of life heads on. Such resilience can be built by getting on your feet as soon as your alarm starts. Keep your snooze button out of reach. Making your bed is the first disciplined act of each day.
  • Developing the social layer is essential because humans are social creatures. Try making friends with fellow parents and communicate with colleagues. Doing so will nourish and strengthen your resilience. Providing support to family and friends and others members when life gets tough is necessary. Practicing gratitude and showing people they are important to you can improve your social resilience.
  •  Most parents are professionals and they earn money. It’s necessary to find work which offers purpose. It helps you feel empowered and inspired. If you are working in a place where you are not satisfied, you might lose interest. If you’re on a break to raise a child it is a good time to think about finding a fulfilling career.
  •  It’s necessary to become adaptable. Life can be unexpected and things can go awry. However, being strong yet flexible develops the resilience shield. It allows you to embrace the unknown and deal whatever life has in store for you.

All these might seem like small things but when done together can take you on an amazing journey of life. Consider developing resilience slowly and steadily so you do not fall off on the path towards it.
